Upgrade Your Rig without Breaking the Bank

Owners get attached to their RVs, and after enough years and enough trips, replacing one is not always what you want. There are upgrades you can do to an ageing travel trailer or motorised RV that don’t cost an arm and a leg and significantly improve comfort and convenience on the road.

LED lighting conversion

Replace your old incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED lights. LED bulbs consume less power, last longer and light the place better. Expect $50 to $200 depending on what you choose.

High-flow ventilation fan

Far better air circulation than a standard vent fan, and most come with a rain cover. From around $150 for a basic model, $200–$400 for the advanced ones.

Rooftop air conditioning and heating unit

A heat pump installed through a skylight opening handles both heating and cooling. It may be more than Canadian RVing needs, but it is essential for desert camping. A good 13,500 BTU unit runs about $500.

Solar panels

Roof-mounted or portable, so you can harness the power of the sun. $200–$1,000 depending on how much power you need, plus mounting and installation.

A quality RV mattress

An RV queen is not a household queen. Good options run $200–$500, and the premium ones go past $1,000.

Kitchen upgrades

Faucets, storage or a refrigerator — $50–$200 for the budget end, more for a full renovation.
