Tips for Planning a Great RV Trip Route
Want to take an RV road trip adventure, but don’t know where to start? Here is how we plan a route.
Pick your destination
Choose an endpoint, a midpoint if the route is circular, or just a region to explore. Provincial tourism websites are full of road trip suggestions if you need a starting point.
Look for the scenic route
Rather than retracing the same highway or following the main tourist route, look at the secondary roads. Travelling slower means a relaxed pace and hidden places — but make sure the route is RV-appropriate, and avoid the rough or steep gravel service roads a GPS will sometimes propose.
Make a list of things to see and do
Historical landmarks, scenic viewpoints, towns, parks — write down everything on the route that appeals to you.
Narrow down the list
Then filter it to what genuinely excites you and what fits in the time you have.
Create a timeline
Give more time to the places that need proper exploring. Plan longer driving days through the uninteresting stretches and shorter ones where there is a lot to see.
Leave space for the unexpected
Don’t schedule so rigidly that spontaneity becomes impossible — the unplanned discoveries are usually the highlights.
Book ahead
Reserve campsites where you can, and read the reviews first. If you plan to boondock, check the overnight parking rules for the areas you have in mind.
Download the app
The RV Care app finds the nearest dealer if you need a repair or supplies on the way.
