From mechanical maintenance to medical precautions, there are steps you can take before hitting the road to prepare you for whatever mishaps may come your way. Stay safe with these tips for the whole family, pets included!

Don’t miss your annual RV inspection

An annual inspection catches wear and tear before it becomes an issue in the middle of your holiday. We always recommend having an annual inspection of your propane system and appliance service done by the pros, as malfunctions in this system can be deadly. The same goes for your tires and brakes.

Safety equipment

Test the smoke alarm, carbon monoxide monitor and propane monitor, and keep spare batteries on hand if they aren’t hardwired. Keep a fire extinguisher on board somewhere easy to reach, and a good roadside emergency kit.

Have a plan if you break down

Bring your RV Care customer card, and know where the closest RV Care dealers are along your route.

Watch the weather

Travelling into fall and winter can mean storms or snow. Check the weather along the route and at the destination, and be prepared for it.

Know your RV’s height

Don’t guess when it comes to passing under low bridges or overhangs — know the number.

Pack a first aid kit

Exploring nature comes with a few bumps and bruises. Stock it well, and add bug spray and something for the bites.

Stock extras of any necessary medications

Pack more than the trip needs, so you aren’t hunting for a pharmacy after an unexpected detour. Travelling with kids, keep something for fevers and allergic reactions on hand.

Consider the wildlife

RVing in bear country? The last thing you want is a night-time visitor because the snacks were left out. Stow your food and your pet’s inside.

Keep your pets safely secured

A seatbelt harness or a carrier that suits their size, so everyone stays put through a hard brake or a sharp turn.

Don’t forget ID tags or a microchip

Losing a pet somewhere unfamiliar is awful. Use your mobile number as the contact on the tag.

At the campground, consider a long leash or portable fence

Space to roam without the squirrel chase.
