How to De-winterize your RV

How to De-winterize your RV

De-winterizing is the important task of reversing the winterizing process you went through in the fall, and getting your RV back in working order. Start as soon as your area’s climate allows, or at least three to four weeks before you plan to leave — rushing it is how a trip gets disrupted.

1. Flush the water system

  • Close all taps and drain valves and install all drain plugs, taking care not to forget the water heater drain plug.
  • Switch the water heater and water pump bypass valves to the summer position.
  • Hook up city water, or fill the fresh water tank and turn the pump on.
  • Open all taps, one at a time, starting with the fixture farthest away from your fresh water tank. Run the water until all the antifreeze has been flushed through.

With an air compressor there is a faster method. Keep the pressure below 50/60 PSI so you don’t damage the waterlines, and use two people — one on the compressor and one opening and closing taps — then flush as above.

2. Perform a pressure test

Once flushed, pressure test the system. It shows up the obvious leaks and the small, unseen ones.

3. Sanitize the water system

RV water systems can be a source of mould and bacteria, so it is important to sanitize your water system before use. We stock the products and can walk you through the procedure.

Two extra steps worth doing

Clean the water heater. A water heater rinse wand goes in through the drain opening and lets you pressure wash the inside, clearing the mineral deposits that build up out of sight.

Improve the water taste. A freshwater additive takes the stale taste out of the system.

An RV with more sophisticated water system components — icemakers, water dispensers, washing machines, dishwashers — may need extra steps. Ask us if you’re unsure. And while you’re doing all this, do a visual inspection for winter damage.
