Favourite Boondocking destinations in Canada

A fun, free way to RV, boondocking is skipping the designated campgrounds and staying without hookups, whether that be in a big-box store parking lot or immersed in nature on Crown Land. Wherever you go, look up the local rules first.

Crown Land

Canadian residents may camp on Crown Land at no cost, for up to 21 days per calendar year at any one location. Sites are generally remote and not always RV accessible — especially the ones reached by logging road. Regulations vary by province; check the provincial government resources before you go.

Recreation sites

Provincial recreation sites and non-operating parks sit between Crown Land and a campground: a little more developed, still off-grid. Be prepared to be self-sufficient.

Rest areas and truck stops

Convenient for an overnight stop on a long drive, though they are not the quietest places. Check the overnight parking policy and pick somewhere well lit.

Retail parking lots

Walmart, Real Canadian Superstore and similar big-box retailers often allow overnight RV parking at the back of the lot. Confirm it from the signage or with the store manager.

Urban boondocking

Municipal rules vary a great deal. Cities often limit how long an RV can stay and enforce RV-specific rules even where the signage doesn’t say so.
