Be Ready for Severe Weather Conditions While RVing

Start with the forecast

Research your destination and route beforehand so you know the weather patterns, and watch the extended forecast as the dates get closer.

In the event of strong winds

Be sure to stow away lightweight outdoor gear that could blow away, such as camp chairs and garbage bags. Retract the awnings and set the stabilizing jacks for stability.

What to do in a heat wave

An RV heats up fast. Camp in the shade under trees, keep the curtains closed through the day, open the door as little as possible, and run the air conditioning or fans continuously.

Take the high road in heavy rain

Watch the water level during heavy rain. If flooding threatens your site, move to higher ground straight away.

Be ready for snow

Carry a collapsible shovel and chains if there is any chance of winter weather. Be prepared with extra supplies and a back-up source of heat and water, should you get snowed in on the road or at your camp site.

In any severe weather event

• Fully charge the RV batteries
• Keep flashlights and matches where you can find them
• Fill the freshwater tanks
• Keep several days of food on board
• Top up the fuel cans

Keep an emergency preparedness kit with first aid supplies, bottled water, emergency food, spare batteries and basic tools.

Know when to hit the road

The advantage of an RV is that you can move. With enough notice, drive out of it.
